The Women in Hebron cooperative:
A Palestinian Women’s Embroidery Cooperative
Women in Hebron is a fair trade cooperative associated with the Idna Association for Embroidery and Handicrafts. The cooperative was founded in 2005. At that time the founder and director, Nawal Slemiah, began selling items from a small table in the Hebron Old City Souq, a short distance from the Ibrahimi Mosque. Since then, WiH has grown from a small table along the street to a permanent shop. This is the only women-owned shop in the Old City.
The 120 women who produce the items sold are from the Hebron District consisting of eight cities and villages. The proceeds from the sales allow the women to generate income in a very difficult situation.
The cooperative is more than an income-generating project; it is an act of community strengthening, of honoring the role of women in society, and a means to show sumud – steadfastness in the face of Occupation.
Tully Partnerships is honored to work with Women in Hebron; partnering to expand the market for their products as well as bringing awareness to the situation through the stories of the women themselves.
